William Smith’s Bath – the Making of his Iconic Map

Discover how William ‘Strata’ Smith, the Father of English Geology, created his iconic map.

This walk will examine the geology of the Midford valley. The route will follow the course of the tramway from William Smith’s quarry to Tucking Mill with a descent and ascent of about 145 metres over a distance of about 4 km. It includes rural footpaths with steps and steep slopes which can be slippery and muddy. Suitable footwear is required and a walking/treking pole is useful. This route is not suitable for wheelchair users, unlike most of our walks.
