Becoming a Guide

Who are the Guides?

Mayor’s Guides come in many guises and from many different backgrounds. We have many retired members of course as they have much more spare time availabler, but we also have our fair share of those still at work but who can fit in walks particularly at weekends. We have secretaries, teachers, solicitors, writers, police officers in fact a very comprehensive cross section of all backgrounds. They all share a love of the city and the enjoyment they get from showing visitors around.

What do I need to know?

You do not need to have a great depth of knowledge at the start, a general knowledge of the city, particularly if you live in or close to it, will suffice. The rest will come with experience and training. Most of our guides are local, but residency is not a necessity. However, for a variety of reasons, we do limit the area from which prospective guides can apply to a ten mile radius around the city centre... A real desire to carry out the walks is important and of course available time.

What do the Guides do?

Each guide will lead a tour of 15 to 20 people.  Each year we escort approximately 30,000 people on the walks. Consult the introductory pages on this website for details of times and days on which we walk.

How much time will I have to give up ?

The amount of time you give up is very flexible depending on each guide. Some prefer to have a regular walk once a week. Others ‘float’, helping out where they can, particularly carrying out walks for guides who are on holiday or are unavailable for short periods. Some prefer to do the occasional booked party. The only basic requirement is that you carry out a minimum of 12 walks a year.

How do I become a Guide ?

Initially it is a good idea to follow one or two walks to find out if it appeals to you. Introduce yourself to the Guide who will be able to answer any queries that you may have. If you decide to go ahead apply to the following address. You will then be sent all the information that you need.

The Mayor’s Office, Guildhall, Bath, BA1 5AW.

Pamphlets on ‘Becoming a Mayor’s Guide’ can also be found in the entrance area of the Guildhall, the main Bath library and from the Mayor’s Office or a copy can be viewed on line by clicking here.

What happens next ?

We will arrange an initial interview at which you will be introduced to your tutor and will be given further information on training, which normally takes about 2/3 months. At  the end of training you will have a test walk and final interview after which, if successful, you will become a Mayor’s Guide

Are there other benefits ?

Apart from the enjoyment of guiding we also have the benefit of the most extensive library on Bath in the area. Once a year we are invited to a dinner in the Guildhall given to us by the Charter Trustees. We also have a programme of social events, visits, and lectures. The Trustees pay our travelling expenses  to and from our duties within the B.&.N.E.S boundary.
